National athletics long-distance runner Avikash Lal won the Suva Challenge 2016 in the half marathon competition in Suva yesterday.
Lal, 21, was at his best clocking a time of one hour 17 minutes and 20 seconds to finish on top.
Jeremiah Shavneel Singh of the Suva Marathon Club with a time of 1:23:38 finished second while Andrew McEvoy was third with a time of 1:24:06.
He is a member of the Jet Runners Club in Nadi which had been organising a number of races in the Western Division.
Club president Abhinesh Kumar said he was happy with the win but there were more work that was needed to be done.
“Now he needs overseas competition because there is no other good competitor in Fiji. We do not mean we don’t have good athletes but if we need to have good results in the international competition we need good competition at home,” he said.
“He did not train much for the competition but he did well and won the competition. His personal best was one hour 15 minutes which was achieved in the Suva Marathon in June in the full marathon earlier this year. ”
The race director Marita Manley said, “We are happy with the tournament as there were 180 participants who took part,” she said.
